First off, what IS an abortion doula?

The term 'doula' originally comes from the Greek word for 'female slave', but was redefined in the 1960s to describe the role of non-medical caregivers who provide emotional, physical, informational, and logistical support. This role has existed in various cultures for centuries, and in our current society, is often associated with birth and death.

Abortion doulas provide compassionate support during the abortion process, offering a safe space for emotional, physical, and spiritual healing. Through holistic care and non-judgmental guidance, doulas help individuals connect with their inner wisdom through providing comfort, practical assistance, and ongoing support as they move through the process and into healing. While abortion doulas can accompany individuals to in-clinic appointments, they are becoming more common via virtual means due to the rise of abortion pill access for self-managed abortions and legal restrictions.

Abortion doulas commonly support people in:

  • Unplanned pregnancy decision making

  • Preparing for an abortion

  • Understanding how to use abortion pills

  • Processing complicated emotions around abortion

  • How to identify and what to do if you have a medical emergency

Five women sit in a cozy room, engaged in conversation, holding cups. One takes notes. Warm tones and a relaxing, friendly vibe.

How are Rouge Doulas different?

We:

  • Are trauma-informed and trained in Compassionate Inquiry, Somatic Counseling, and Patient-Centered Decision Assessment and Counseling models.

  • Regard Informed Consent as the gold standard in abortion care. Our primary mission is to assist you in discovering your own truth and making the choice that is best for you, whether it involves pregnancy or abortion. We welcome those who are already confident in their decision to have an abortion, as well as those seeking tools to make a decision and feel empowered in their choice, regardless of what it may be.

  • Have a global perspective with our doulas located all over the world. We speak several languages, including English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

  • Encompass a wide range of interests and specialties, ensuring we can connect you with the perfect doula for your needs. This includes areas such as spirituality, ambivalence, country-specific issues, second-trimester abortions, practical requirements, and more.

  • Undergo a more comprehensive training than the typical abortion doula program. While we begin with the usual medical training based on the WHO Safe Abortion guidelines, we also place a deep emphasis on emotional support and draw from the expertise of abortion collectives and leaders experienced in this field.

  • Support anyone with a uterus. Trans, non-binary, and gender-expansive folks are welcome here.

  • Have a deep understanding and thorough knowledge of diverse country-specific contexts and connections, allowing seekers to access local resources more effectively through our global network.

What happens when you contact us?

You will initially contact us through our HIPAA-compliant jotform. Your information will remain confidential and will not be stored. After you submit, we will connect you with a doula and you will communicate through an encrypted messaging and voice app to ensure your privacy and safety.

An abortion with pills can take up to two weeks, including time for contemplation and recovery. Rouge Doulas are here to support you at every stage, in whatever you need, helping you make informed and empowered decisions. You can message your doula anytime for one-on-one support, even if you need to process years after your abortion.

We are a free service, but if you’re able to donate something to continue helping us empower others in their health, we will be infinitely grateful.
